State Visits - III

Today another picture where Standart is in her element as Ship of State; Wilhelm II, German Emperor is visiting Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russias. Standart was a source of envy to Wilhelm II and more than once Wilhelm II made the remark that Standart would be a suitable gift. The German Ship of State, The Hohenzollern, certainly lacked the elegant lines and seagoing qualities that were so much part of Standart's signature.

Look at several remarkable details in this photograph!

  1. A lovely photograph, and like many which show the crew of HIMY Standart standing all at attention as their Empereur walks by. It is truly amazing. The life-boat davits for the launches and larger of the twelve boats were quite modern for their time. They gave Standart such a unique and modern look but even then she still looked of the times.

As you said the Kaiser's yacht, a re-purposed cruiser of the Germany Imperial Navy lacked the Standart's characteristic elegance and profile. The Kaiser was envious as was King Edward VII.

I think any monarch of Europe, or
socialite/millionaire/billionaire would want the Standart as a gift :). She was just that beautiful! Thank-you for making this blogspot Harald! I really do appreciate your efforts!
